28.07.10London 2012 launches its volunteer programme

With just two years to go until the start of London 2012, the London Olympic Games Organising Committee has this week launched their volunteering programme, looking for over 70,000 ‘Games Makers’.

Seb Coe, Chairman of the LOGOC highlighted the importance of volunteers at London 2012; “the volunteers are the difference between a good and a great Olympic Games”.

Whilst being a part of the London 2012 Olympic Games is a once in a lifetime chance, carrying out any volunteer work provides huge benefits to you as an individual and ultimately, your level of employability.

Volunteering provides real life experience of a working environment, offering the chance to learn new skills and capabilities, whilst further developing core competencies, all of which will be well recognised within a CV. It is also an opportunity to meet new people, become part of networks and connections and impress those you are working for.

Volunteering also speaks volumes to an employer; a recent survey showed that 73% of employers would employ a candidate with volunteering experience over one without. Given the highly competitive nature of the sport and leisure industry, any involvement in volunteering programmes such as those offered by London 2012 would provide an unprecedented platform that would put you ahead of many other applicants.

MY CSL STORY

Donna's Story

I’ve always loved sport, everything about it, especially winning! Because of this I have always wanted to work in sport, I just figure that if I’m going to be working every day, why not make it in something that I love.

I heard about Careers in Sport + Leisure in Sheffield last year and because I'm doing an event management course at university which finishes next year I wanted to get some on hand experience of real events and how they run, so I volunteered to help out.

The experience was great and I'm so glad that I did it. Since then I have managed to work on a number of events as I work towards completing my course as well as doing some work as a research assistant for a major sporting events consultancy!
