About Lead Further

The provision of sport for colleges is heavily reliant on the unselfish contributions from a vast network of sports volunteers who commit their time, energy and resources to enable the running of sport activities and programmes across the country. These activities provide much needed opportunities for young people to participate in sport whilst the development programmes have the power to transform lives and help young people to go onto to achieve in sport, career and life.

The ‘Lead Further’ foundation was set up by British Colleges Sport to help grow, sustain and excel sports volunteering within the sector, through;

• The recruitment, development and retention of the next generation of volunteers.

• Enabling the sharing of expertise and capacity building within the active volunteer network.

• Providing a mechanism for education, training and guidance for student and staff.

By obtaining charitable status the foundation aims to attract additional investment into this much needed area and ensure that vital funds can be used to make a targeted impact to support and develop young people and staff who in turn support sport within their colleges and local, regional and national communities.

The Vision

The vision for the foundation is to develop and support a vibrant network of skilled and motivated volunteers in FE Colleges across the UK who will use their experiences to help themselves and others achieve beyond their dreams in sport, career and life.

Aims

The Foundation has 6 key aims:

1. To raise the profile nationally of what young people can achieve through leadership and volunteering in sport.

2. To encourage more students and staff to ‘get involved’ in volunteering

3. To challenge the most promising volunteers regionally and nationally to test themselves and explore new ideas and ways of working

4. To empower and equip students and staff with a variety of valuable skills that will serve them well in their careers and lives

5. To involve students in the BCS processes of planning, shaping and developing its’ programmes to ensure they are student-centred

6. To create supportive networks that will aid students and staff in their professional development

Who does the Foundation support?

• Students studying at FE Colleges who work as volunteers to support the development of sports activities in addition to their studies, and who want to develop their leadership skills.

• Staff working within FE Colleges who commit significant time on top of the college roles to support the development of student sport locally, regionally and nationally.

• Those with a vested interest and commitment towards the development of further education sport including those that take part as coaches, referees, and behind the scenes organisers.
